Fairfax is an independent city in Virginia. It is situated in the northern portion of the state within the Washington metropolitan area. The city has a population of around 25,000 people and many of the surrounding communities have a Fairfax address even though they are not officially within the city limits. If you want to explore all that Washington DC has to offer, you might consider staying in a Fairfax hotel. This city is only 30 minutes away from the capital of the nation. It has many attractions of its own, but it is also a nice quiet place to stay when you want to explore Washington DC.

Fairfax is home to the Civil War Interpretive Center. This center is located at Historic Blenheim, an estate that dates back to 1855. The city purchased this estate in 1999 in order to preserve the Civil War house and turn it into a museum and its grounds into an open-air park. The brick farmhouse has 12 acres of space and the property is included on the National Register for Historic Places. The "diary on walls" is the most significant attraction at the center. This wall has over 100 signatures, poetry and artwork created by Union soldiers. The wall provides insight into what life as a soldier was like during the Civil War. The center also has a good meeting space and many other outdoor facilities visitors can enjoy.

The Reston Museum, in the nearby city of Reston, offers walking tours and many different exhibits that highlight various areas of the community. With children's workshops, a collection of artifacts that relate to the history of the region and much more, this museum has plenty for every visitor. You can look through newspaper and magazine articles from 1965 to the present day as well as enjoy the social and cultural aspects of the past and present of the town.

Since you are only 30 minutes away from the capital city, many visitors spend much of their time in the larger area. Fairfax is a wonderful base location for a visit to Washington DC. You can stay in a Fairfax hotel, enjoy the quiet hometown atmosphere and easily access the busier areas when you want to.

Washington DC has enough to keep any traveler busy for as long as they are in the area. The city is steeped full of history, monuments, memorials, politics, museums and much more. The most popular monuments in the city are the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. These two monuments are located in the same general area within the National Mall, so it is easy to visit both in one day. Many visitors also want to see the White House and U.S Capitol Building, two of the most important buildings in the city. The Iwo Jima Memorial was built to resemble the famous picture that was taken during World War II while the Vietnam Memorial is a black granite wall with a long list of names. Both are very moving, as is the Korean War Veterans Memorial that depicts 19 soldiers working their way through the tough terrain of Korea.

The National Air and Space Museum is one of the most popular museums in the city and the entire world. The National Museum of Natural History is another one of the top museums in the nation's capital. If you enjoy art, you do not want to miss the National Gallery of Art and the National Cathedral is a gothic structure that will make you feel as if you are in Europe.
